I disagree about your judgement that there was a kind of regression - I play the game for ages now, and I think it never felt more vibrant in terms of gameplay, and there was certainly an increase of animations and an improvement of the graphics.

Making a game mod-able is not an easy task, and it certainly ain't done but just a bit of organization. It requires a lot of work and has a high risk to backfire.
